Empowering Youth : Leaders for Today and Tomorrow

An important component to GPYC work is empowering youth and giving them the tools succeed in both their personal and academic lives. In guiding and empowering youth, our regular workshops and projects engage young people in work that challenges them to develop skills, gain awareness, and participate in opportunities that are necessary for creating change both in their own lives and in their communities. Through the development of leadership skills, young people are empowered, supported, and encouraged to find and use their voice as a means of building a stronger community; helping them reach their full potential.

Monthly leadership development sessions were held at Diamond College, Kathmandu Model College, Bhakti International Academy, Diamond School and Schems School. During each session, various leadership activities were conducted focusing on leadership development. Pair and small discussions , cooperative games, presentations, brainstorming, worksheet writing were all used during the sessions, which saw young people participating in a wide variety of activities that helped foster both leadership and communication skills.

Series of events were held and focused on the development of personality skills and social skills. The events included small discussion groups, where participants discussed skills needed to be leaders in their communities. In October as the exam period was about to get underway, we held a series of session in colleges around Kathmandu. The sessions focused on stress management as well as focus and concentration. The well-attended sessions, which included lectures and group activities served as motivation for the students to realize greater possibilities for positive improvement and personal development. While the session focused on the academic sphere of the students the skills learned will serve in their everyday lives.

Another program that is dedicated to enhancing youth leadership development is the LEAD-In program, GPYC organized a Public Speaking Workshop in association with the Kathmandu School of Speaking. The workshop was led by Mr. Shaurab Lohani and gave aspiring leaders the chance to develop their skills as effective communicators. Participants were given the opportunity to practice public speaking as well as discuss techniques for preparing presentations and engaging audiences.
